About N,N-Dimethyltryptamine

N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is a tryptamine psychedelic. It is chemically distinct from 5-MeO-DMT and 4-AcO-DMT, which have their own evidence and risks.

DETAILED REFERENCE

DMT information

What is DMT?

DMT alters perception and awareness. It occurs in certain plants and is associated with ayahuasca preparations, whose additional ingredients change the pharmacology. Findings about a particular preparation cannot automatically be applied to isolated DMT.

Effects and health risks

Reported effects include intense perceptual changes, agitation and increased heart rate. Impaired awareness can contribute to injury. Severe distress or an altered level of consciousness requires medical assessment.

Dosage and research context

This reference does not establish a self-use dose. Investigational products and study protocols are not equivalent to powders or preparations of uncertain composition.

Interactions

Ayahuasca preparations may include monoamine oxidase inhibitors. These create a different interaction profile from DMT alone; disclose psychiatric medicines and supplements to a clinician.

Chemical identity and related tryptamines

N,N-DMT contains a tryptamine core with two methyl groups on its terminal nitrogen. The prefixes in 5-MeO-DMT and 4-AcO-DMT describe additional chemical changes, not brand variants of N,N-DMT.

DMT and ayahuasca are different preparations

Ayahuasca is a preparation containing multiple substances. Harmala alkaloids can inhibit enzymes that otherwise metabolize DMT. The resulting exposure and interaction context differs from isolated DMT.

What a DMT study can establish

A study using a characterized DMT product can examine that material under its specified conditions. It cannot establish the composition of a preparation sold under an informal name, or transfer findings unchanged to a different tryptamine.

DMT versus psilocybin

DMT and psilocybin are different tryptamines. Psilocybin is associated with conversion to psilocin, while ayahuasca introduces additional pharmacologically active ingredients. Similar descriptions of altered perception do not establish identical metabolism or clinical use.
