Psilocybin information
Psilocybin and mushroom names
Psilocybin-containing mushrooms are often called magic mushrooms. Psilocybe cubensis is one species; Golden Teacher, Penis Envy and B+ are names used for cultivated varieties within it.

Effects and risks
Changes in perception, nausea, anxiety and panic may occur. Mistaking a poisonous mushroom for a psilocybin-containing one can cause severe poisoning.

Dosage: mushrooms are not standardized medicines
The mass of mushroom material does not reliably state its active-compound content. Laboratory analysis has found variation between and within cultivated strains. DrugRX does not provide a self-use dose.
Medical and research context
Clinical investigation of psychedelics involves specific protocols and monitoring. Results for a defined study product cannot establish the benefit of a mushroom variety sold under a commercial name.
Psilocybin and psilocin
Psilocybin is converted to psilocin in the body. Psilocin’s effects involve serotonin signaling. A measured quantity of purified psilocybin and an equal weight of mushroom material describe entirely different exposures.

Clinical research versus variety claims
Mental-health research evaluates specified preparations with screening and monitoring. A result for a research product does not demonstrate that Golden Teacher, Penis Envy or another cultivated name has a unique therapeutic effect.

Species and cultivated names
Psilocybe cubensis names a fungal species. Golden Teacher and B+ are cultivated labels associated with that species. Psilocybin names a compound rather than an organism or a particular mushroom appearance.

Psilocybin versus psilacetin
4-AcO-DMT, or psilacetin, is a distinct synthetic compound investigated in relation to psilocin metabolism. It should not be relabeled as psilocybin merely because the compounds are pharmacologically related.
