DETAILED REFERENCE

Gabapentin information

Uses and formulations

Used for partial seizures and postherpetic neuralgia. Related extended-release products have different indications and are not automatically interchangeable.

Side effects and serious risks

Dizziness, sleepiness and poor coordination can occur. Mood changes and breathing problems, especially with other depressants, require assessment.

Sources: MedlinePlus — Gabapentin

Dosage and directions

Kidney function can affect the prescription. Do not abruptly stop seizure treatment or substitute formulations without instructions.

Sources: MedlinePlus — Gabapentin

Interactions and precautions

Review opioid and sedative use. Antacids can affect absorption, so ask the pharmacist about product-specific spacing.

Sources: MedlinePlus — Gabapentin

Pharmacology and mechanism

Gabapentin interacts with the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels. Despite its name and chemical relationship to GABA, it is not a direct benzodiazepine-like GABA receptor agonist.

Formulations and product identification

The active ingredient alone does not describe a finished product. These distinctions matter when reading a label or comparing prescriptions.

Product or formulationImportant distinction
Immediate-release gabapentinUsed for particular seizure and nerve-pain indications.
Other release formulationsMay differ in approved uses and absorption.

Monitoring and treatment follow-up

Kidney function affects elimination. Dizziness, gait problems and sleepiness may affect daily function, especially when other sedating medicines are also used. A formulation change can require different instructions.

Sources: DailyMed — Neurontin prescribing information

Dependence and stopping treatment

Abrupt changes after regular use can cause problems, including loss of seizure control in patients treated for epilepsy. Misuse has been reported, but physiological dependence, therapeutic use and addiction are different clinical questions.

How it differs from related medicines

Pregabalin is a separate gabapentinoid, not a brand of gabapentin. A numerical dose cannot be transferred between them. Neurontin and modified-release gabapentin products also should not be assumed to have identical directions.
