DETAILED REFERENCE

Vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) information

Medical uses and treatment context

Lisdexamfetamine is used for ADHD in adults and children aged six and older, and moderate-to-severe binge eating disorder in adults. It is not approved as a weight-loss treatment.

The treatment indication matters when evaluating a prescription. Approval for binge eating disorder does not mean that an amphetamine medicine is appropriate for general appetite control or obesity.

  • ADHD: treatment is part of an individual clinical care plan.
  • Binge eating disorder: the approved indication is for adults.
  • Suitability depends on the patient’s medical and psychiatric history.

Pharmacology and mechanism

Lisdexamfetamine is a prodrug: the body converts it into dextroamphetamine and L-lysine. Its stimulant effects involve dopamine and norepinephrine signaling.

This list is not a complete adverse-effect profile. The prescribing information describes monitoring and precautions for each risk.

Dosage and administration

The prescription depends on the indication, formulation, response and kidney function. Follow the specific product instructions; do not change the dose or schedule independently.

Capsules and chewable tablets require their own administration instructions. Ask the pharmacist before opening a capsule, changing dosage forms or substituting a product. This summary does not replace the Medication Guide.

Misuse, dependence and storage

Taking a stimulant without a prescription or in a way other than prescribed can cause serious harm. Physical dependence and addiction describe different clinical issues.

  • Do not share or sell the medicine.
  • Store it securely to reduce accidental or unauthorized access.
  • Discuss treatment changes with the prescriber rather than abruptly changing regular use.

Drug interactions and precautions

MAO inhibitors are an important contraindication. Other serotonergic medicines and certain drugs affecting dextroamphetamine exposure also require review.

  • Provide a complete medication and supplement list.
  • Tell the clinician about cardiovascular and psychiatric history.
  • Ask before combining prescription stimulants or changing other medicines.

An interaction review must use the actual products and doses involved. A short category list cannot establish that an individual combination is safe.

Overdose and urgent symptoms

A suspected overdose requires urgent medical advice. Seizures, collapse, trouble breathing or inability to wake require emergency services.

Do not wait for an online response or try to manage a severe reaction by changing another medicine. Keep the product information available for the medical team when possible.
