Cannabidiol, or CBD, is a cannabis compound that does not cause the characteristic THC high. That distinction does not make all CBD products risk-free.

Cannabidiol information
Prescription CBD versus consumer products
Purified prescription CBD is used for specific seizure disorders. Oils, gummies and topical products sold under a CBD label are not automatically equivalent to that medicine.

Side effects and interactions
Liver injury, drowsiness and drug interactions are concerns. Product contents may differ from labels; discuss CBD use with the clinician managing other medicines.

Dosage context
Prescription directions apply to the specified product and diagnosis. They should not be used as a dose guide for an arbitrary consumer oil or edible.

Prescription and consumer CBD
An approved purified CBD medicine has particular indications and product controls. Consumer oils, creams or gummies are not automatically equivalent to it. A shared ingredient name is not approval of every finished preparation.

Liver effects and medication review
FDA identifies liver injury and drug interactions among important CBD concerns. A person taking other medicines should include CBD in the medication history, even when it is marketed as a wellness product rather than a drug.
Nonintoxicating does not mean inactive
CBD does not cause the characteristic THC high, but it can still have biological effects and adverse reactions. A product labeled CBD may also contain other cannabinoids; composition and the name of one ingredient are different questions.

CBD versus THC and generic medicines
CBD and THC are different compounds. A consumer CBD product is also not a generic equivalent of a prescription CBD medicine simply because it lists the same broad ingredient. Formulation, evidence and regulatory status matter.
