Interactions and precautions
Seizure or eating-disorder history and abrupt alcohol or sedative withdrawal need review. MAO inhibitors and other medicines may interact.

Pharmacology and mechanism
Bupropion has noradrenergic and dopaminergic effects, although its full antidepressant mechanism is not established. It is not an SSRI and has a different interaction and adverse-effect profile.
Formulations and product identification
The active ingredient alone does not describe a finished product. These distinctions matter when reading a label or comparing prescriptions.
| Product or formulation | Important distinction |
|---|---|
| Immediate-release bupropion | Has its own dosing schedule. |
| SR and XL products | Different release designs; not identical directions. |
| Smoking-cessation products | The treatment indication must be identified. |
Monitoring and treatment follow-up
Clinical review includes mood, sleep and blood pressure. Seizure risk is an important consideration, especially with particular medical histories or other medicines that lower the seizure threshold.
Dependence and stopping treatment
Using more than one bupropion-containing product can unintentionally increase exposure. A brand prescribed for depression and another prescribed for smoking cessation should not be combined independently.
How it differs from related medicines
Wellbutrin XL and bupropion SR differ in release characteristics. Bupropion is also different from prescription amphetamine stimulants, even though both may have activating effects. A shared subjective effect is not evidence of interchangeability.
