Methylphenidate information
Uses and formulations
Used for ADHD and, with some products, narcolepsy. Focalin contains dexmethylphenidate, a related medicine rather than the same active ingredient.

Side effects and serious risks
Poor appetite, insomnia and abdominal discomfort are possible. Serious heart and psychiatric effects need prompt medical assessment.
Sources: MedlinePlus — Methylphenidate
Dosage and directions
Product timing varies substantially. Do not substitute an extended-release product or crush its tablets unless the specific product instructions allow it.

Interactions and precautions
Review heart history, blood pressure, tics and psychiatric conditions. MAO inhibitors and other stimulants require checking.

U.S. federal classification
Listed federally in Schedule II. Classification does not by itself establish that a particular product is approved or that an online transaction is lawful. State requirements and product-specific rules also apply.

Pharmacology and mechanism
Methylphenidate affects dopamine and norepinephrine signaling, including inhibition of their reuptake. It is a different chemical from amphetamine despite overlapping clinical uses.
Formulations and product identification
The active ingredient alone does not describe a finished product. These distinctions matter when reading a label or comparing prescriptions.
| Product or formulation | Important distinction |
|---|---|
| Immediate-release tablets | Have different timing from longer-acting preparations. |
| Extended-release products | Release systems differ between products. |
| Dexmethylphenidate products | Contain a related but distinct active ingredient. |
Monitoring and treatment follow-up
Treatment review includes benefit, appetite, sleep, weight and cardiovascular measurements. A brand change may alter the delivery profile, so a familiar ingredient name alone does not explain every difference in daily response.
Dependence and stopping treatment
Stimulant misuse can cause serious harm. Taking extra medicine for academic or occupational performance is not the same as following an ADHD prescription. Long-term treatment is monitored for effectiveness and emerging risks.
How it differs from related medicines
Focalin contains dexmethylphenidate, rather than the same mixture of enantiomers as methylphenidate. Ritalin and Concerta also differ in formulation. Related names do not establish equivalent doses or schedules.
